Relax with Protected Donkeys on Lamu
I didn't take near enough pictures here in Lamu! There are some wonderful little shops all over the place where you can buy everything known to be in Kenya. I spent just a little time looking around in the shops. Mostly, I was more interested in sitting on the waterside of the city looking at Lamu Bay. It was a buzz of activity with dhows coming and going. We actually had the great fun of seeing the police bust a boat loaded with illegal cargo of some sort. We watched cargo boats offloaded "by hand" one man throwing the parcel to another to another to another till it was on land and stacked up.
Everything on the island must be imported. So here are piles of goods which are stacked ready for distribution. But by far the quaintest part of the island are the donkeys. Donkeys here there and everywhere. They are a protected species!!!! Yes it's true!
The trip off the island was on a prop plane. WELL worth it as the bus ride up to Lamu was absolutely scary. I gave Tom instructions on what to do if we tipped over. !!!! Mr. Toad's Wild Ride - Kenya style! Go to the page on Lamu for much more on the absolute enjoyment we experienced in this coastal part of Kenya.
